Leatherback season has started!

Excitement this morning during morning turtle patrol! Our first two activities were recorded at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge, and our season is now underway! We had heard reports that leatherbacks had started showing up around the region – in Puerto Rico, Grenada, Florida, and Colombia, and now St. Croix. It’s a bit early to have nests on the refuge, so we are hopeful that this means a good season ahead of us. Nesting has been down the last five years or so, but maybe this year things will turn around.

We will start our nighttime patrols later this month, but in the meantime, you can see which turtles visited us last year here! Please check in regularly to see what’s happening!

We’re off to make sure our gear is all ready, new items ordered and the team in place. We will hold a volunteer meeting during April – date, location and time will be announced on our Facebook page – so be sure to follow us there as well.

Thanks so much for your interest!
